The coastal city known as Playas (short for its official name: General Villamil Playas) is located in the province of Guayas, Ecuador, approximately 60 miles (96 km) from Guayaquil — the largest, most populous city in Ecuador.
Playas has a population of 35,000, most of whom are engaged in either tourism or the fishing industry, working at fish processing plants and in shrimp farms. This area of Ecuador is much sought-after due to its climate (hot days, with cool and pleasant evenings) and 17 miles of perfect beaches with an average width of 500 meters.
As a recreational hotspot in the southern highlands of Ecuador, Playas offers visitors a variety of year-round outdoor activities and watersports including surfing, windsurfing, skydiving, body- boarding and fishing.
Visitors to Playas will enjoy rich cuisine with the most exquisite dishes, including a unique variety of daily fresh-caught seafood. Some popular and delicious main dishes include rice with fried fish, seafood casserole, oyster ceviche, shrimp ceviche, mixed ceviche, lobster ceviche, lobster in garlic sauce, and grilled lobster. Clearly there are plenty of offerings to satisfy even the most demanding palates.
